A Call for Balanced Voices in Media and Hidden Gems in Southern Oregon

In a time when media representation is so important, Josette Brose-Eichar of Sonoma has placed a powerful demand for local journalism to represent more balanced views. With her letter, Brose-Eichar reflects on Bob Gardner’s “The Right Side” opinion pieces, stating a frustration many women and people of color already have: these columns read “like a litany of thinly veiled, joking attacks” against any person not of the conservative, affluent, white persuasion. She suggests the Index-Tribune hire a progressive writer so that counterpoints on issues such as equal rights, taking care of the environment, and standing up for democracy can be provided.

The Index-Tribune responded by pointing out their commitment to diverse opinions and encouraging readers to share their thoughts and comments with the editorial team.

Meanwhile, deep inside serene southern Oregon is the town of Prospect, which harbors a surprise bundle of natural beauty. Jamie Hale recounts a journey that began as simply running out of gas and unwinding with a discovery of stunning waterfalls. Deep in the Cascade Mountains, Mill Creek and Barr Creek Falls are near the Prospect State Scenic Viewpoint.

Hale captures, with vivid imagery, the scene where Mill Creek and Barr Creek both tumble hundreds of feet to join the Rogue River, constructing a landscape of verdant forests and dramatic geology. Where there once had been timberlands, now turn out escapes for those hiking and nature-driven alike. A host of trails brings visitors to such sites as the small, very pleasing Pearsoney Falls and the multi-step cascade called Prospect Falls.

The total lack of cell service coupled with the labyrinthine trail network makes Hale’s adventure one of a kind, replete with bounties at every step off the beaten track. Add to this ambling through Avenue of the Boulders with Mt. McLoughlin in view, and there’s ample enticement for this rural escape.

As Hale concludes his video, Prospect’s waterfalls and landscape give a glimpse, if only brief, into something resembling a secreted island in the tropics—an intangible, captured gem that few have seen of the beauty left untouched in southern Oregon.

In a world where diverse voices and hidden wonders often go unseen, both Brose-Eichar’s call for balanced media representation and Hale’s discovery of Prospect’s natural beauty remind us of the need to explore new perspectives and places.

For those wishing to chime in on the discussion or to forge their path, the Index-Tribune and the trails overlooking Prospect stand ready.
