Playing as a forward for the Manchester United team from 1954 until his retirement in 1973, Charlton faced a significant challenge when he survived an airplane crash near Munich, West Germany, on February 6, 1958. Despite the loss of eight Manchester United regulars in the crash, Charlton's inspired play led the team, mainly composed of reserves, to the Football Association Cup final match that year. He played a key role in England's victory in the 1966 World Cup and was honored as the European Footballer of the Year. Charlton also captained Manchester United in 1968 when they became the first English club to win the European Cup, now known as the Champions League. Additionally, he led Manchester United to three First Division league championships in 1957, 1965, and 1967.

Following his retirement from Manchester United, Charlton managed the Preston North End team from 1973 to 1975 and later served as a director of the Wigan Athletic Football Club. In 1984, he became a member of the Manchester United board of directors. Charlton was not only a celebrated figure in football but also played a significant role as an ambassador for the game. He actively participated in various English World Cup and Olympic Games bids, contributing to the success of the London 2012 Olympic Games campaign. In recognition of his contributions, Queen Elizabeth II knighted Charlton in 1994.
Apart from his achievements on the field, Charlton authored several books, including "My Soccer Life" (1965), "Forward for England" (1967), "My Manchester United Years: The Autobiography" (2007), "My England Years: The Autobiography" (2008), and other publications.
